Quarter Acre Farm

One 3 inch fiber pot containing 3 Tohono O’odham cowpea seedlings. Highly drought- and heat-tolerant variety often used for summer cover crops. 6-7 in. purple-tinged pods. Earthy- flavored seeds have black and white markings like Holstein cows. For fresh use, harvest when seeds have filled the green pods, but before seeds have hardened. For dried use, make sure to harvest dried pods before rain or else seeds will mold. Let dried pods finish drying under cover in a rodent-proof space. This vegetable seems to have a different name in each section of the country. Cowpeas are also called southern peas, field peas, crowder peas, and black-eyed peas. By whatever name you call them, they’re an old favorite in the South

Flavor improves with blanching. Loses some vitality after several pickings. If you wish continuous production of pole beans till frost, make a second planting.

One 3 inch fiber pot containing 1 certified organic luffa gourd seedling. May be more closely related to the cucumber than to the hardshell Lagenaria. Also known as Dishrag Gourd, dried and used for making bath sponges. Mature, dark green 14-24 in. fruits may be retted (soaked in water to soften while the soft tissue breaks down). Once retting is complete, they are cleaned and ready to use as sponges or filters. Vines have pretty, bright yellow flowers.

A most attractive pepper plant with distinctive green and white mottled foliage and 2" curving pendent fruits that look a little like swimming fish. They turn from white with green stripes to orange with brown stripes to red, packing considerable heat and full-bodied flavor that especially enhances shellfish. A mutation of a common serrano pepper that probably originated in the 1870s, by 1900 Fish was extensively grown by the African-American community around Philadelphia and Baltimore.

One 3 inch fiber pot containing 1 certified organic ubatuba cambuci spice hot pepper seedling. Peppers shaped like bells, each with 2-5 prominent, flattened lobes with a great, fruity flavor. Its very low level of heat is appreciated in Brazil as well as in the US. Easy to dry. Cambuci peppers are named after the Cambuci fruit, which they also resemble, which in turn is named for being shaped like an indigenous style of earthen jar.

One 3 inch fiber pot containing 1 certified organic xochiteco hot pepper seedling. Medium heat. Delicious both green and red. Fruits vary in shape, but average 3/8" x 1". Ripe fruits slip easily off the plants and are juicy and very easy to mash into hot sauce.

Let any turn red, and they can be roasted, or dried for a delicious paprika. The beauty of this pepper as it turns is noteworthy. Beginning with the faintest red overtones blending into its yellow background, the red blush grows more pronounced as it matures.

One 3 inch fiber pot containing 1 certified organic queen of malinalco tomatillo seedling. Hails from the small Aztec town of Malinalco, in the Ixtapan region of Mexico. Peculiar 3"-long oblong pointed fruits ripen from green to lemon yellow with a flavor that surprises and delights! Sweet and tropical, like a ground cherry, perfect for fresh eating, roasting, grilling and for fruity salsas. Robust multi-branched bushes easily reach 3' tall and appreciate support. Harvest when fruit is plump and husk splits.

One 3 inch fiber pot containing 1 certified organic tromboncino zucchini seedling. Light green fruits grow long, curving to a bell at one end. Vining plants can be grown on a trellis. Harvest at 8-10 in. long when the flavor is fine and sweet. Vigorous moschata plants can bear all season in areas where insects are a problem for other zucchini or summer squash. If left to mature, skin will ripen to tan like a butternut squash.

Saturday, July 19th our take home meal will be Beer-brined Pork Ribs with Green Beans. We take pork ribs and place them into a brine of water, beer, lime juice, salt and black pepper. The ribs are then cooked on the grill and served with a side of blanched green beans and garnished with pico de gallo. Just heat it up and dinner is done! 🤗 Our ready-to-heat meals are made to serve one person but if prepared with a starch or an additional side they could feed two people. These ready-to-heat meals are cooked fresh the day before the market, packed, and frozen. We have designed them for you to have simple but marvelous meals at home. Just pick them up at the market, pop them in your freezer or refrigerator when you get home, then simply heat them up in the microwave or oven when you want. Right now we'll just have one offering each week.

Freshly made fish ceviche you can serve with tortilla chips, crackers or alone as a refreshing salad. Our fish ceviche is made of local white fish marinated in lime juice with ripe tomatoes, chopped onions, fresh cilantro, kosher salt, and black pepper; thats it! No preservatives are used, so it must be kept refrigerated.

Our fresh guacamole is made from ripe avocados, fresh cilantro, hand squeezed lime juice, kosher salt and black pepper; thats it no fillers. This is what avocados dreams are made of, our guacamole goes perfectly with chips, tacos, or whatever your heart desires. No preservatives are used, so it must be kept refrigerated.

Freshly made pico de gallo (also known as salsa fresca) makes the perfect snack with tortilla chips, as a topping on your favorite tacos, or a great side dish. Our pico de gallo is made from ripe tomatoes, chopped onions, fresh cilantro, hand squeezed lime juice, kosher salt, and black pepper; thats it! No preservatives are used, so it must be kept refrigerated.

Heads of cured basque garlic. This hardneck variety has bulbs that are uniform in shape with easy to peel 6-8 cloves per bulb. Basque garlic is small but mighty in flavor and is one of the best roasting varieties - it is like candy when roasted! This hardneck Turban type with flattened bulbs occasional purple striping from Basque Country in the in the autonomous province of Navarre (Nafarroa), Northern Spain. It has a quick heat when eaten raw, fading into an earthy finish. In the Basque language garlic is “baratxuri”. (The photo shows a container with 1/4 pound worth of garlic.)

Heads of cured red janice garlic. This hardneck variety has contain 5-9 cloves. Red Janice is a Turban hardneck that originated in the Republic of Georgia. It has deep red cloves under purple skins. Flavor is sweet and spicy when roasted, and has quite the sharp kick when eaten raw.

Green tomatillos by the pound. A staple of Mexican cuisine, they are eaten raw and cooked in a variety of dishes. Tomatillos are usually cooked to bring out full flavor: Roast in the oven or simmer for 5-10 minutes in a pot of water, then use in chili rellenos, salsa verde, and other sauces or dips.
